Madness - My Girl - Lyrics Meaning

My Girl by Madness was released in 1979 and reached number 3 in the UK charts.

This song was written by Madness keyboard player Mike Barton who penned this on the back of a cigarette packet. He was a lorry driver at the time, his job was delivering bananas. He gave a newspaper interview explaining that the person that he worked with on the lorry was always talking about 'My girl and me, we're going to do this, My girl and me are going to do that, etc, etc , hence the title of the song.

The lyrics of the song are about a chap and his feelings for his girlfriend. He starts by saying that he didn't want to go out with her one night, nothing serious, he just wanted to stay at home and watch TV but she got the wrong idea and thought he had had enough of her.

The problem is that she has now got it in her head that he no longer cares and he is finding it hard to try and convince her that this is definitely not the case.

The song ends with the couple still arguing and the girl accusing him of being weak.
