Pussycat Dolls - Jai Ho (You Are My Destiny) - Lyrics Meaning

Indian poet Gulzar wrote the lyrics to this song for the 2008 film "Slumdog Millionaire," which, in 2009, took home eight Academy Awards including Best Picture and Best Original Song (for "Jai Ho").

The film tells the story of a young man from the slums who appears as a contestant on the Indian version of "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" in an effort to locate the woman he loves. After a successful run, he is one question away from the grand prize when he is accused of cheating. Through a series of flashbacks, he is able to show that his life experiences all somehow related to the questions he had answered. He was released, went back to the show and won the grand prize after answering the final question correctly.

In Hindi, "Jai Ho" means "May you be victorious," or "Victory to you." Composer A.R. Rahman said that the song was intended to create "a vision of the whole world celebrating this victory." Nicole Scherzinger, lead singer of The Pussycat Dolls, calls her version of the song an interpretation, rather than a remix.

You are the reason that I breathe

You are the reason that I still believe

You are my destiny

Jai Ho!
