The Killers - Jenny Was a Friend of Mine - Lyrics Meaning

Though "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine," which appeared on the Killers' debut album Hot Fuss in 2004, was never released as a single, the track spawned discussion throughout the band's fan base. In various interviews the band has explained that the song is part of a group of three songs, which they refer to as "the murder trilogy." The first, titled "Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf," tells the story of a relationship, with a woman named Jennifer, gone wrong. The song was not released on an album, however, until 2007's Sawdust, a compilation of the band's covers, remixes, rare recordings, and B-sides. The second song in the trilogy, "Midnight Show," also appears on Hot Fuss. It is in this track that the murder actually occurs: "I took my baby's breath beneath the chandelier / Of stars in atmosphere / And watch her disappear." "Jenny Was a Friend of Mine" is the final installment in the series. In this song, the narrator has been arrested and is being questioned by the police ("I know my rights, I've been here all day and it's time /

For me to go, so let me know if it's all right"). Fans debate about whether or not the character ever shows remorse for his actions.
