Though ``Jenny Was a Friend of Mine,'' which appeared on the Killers' debut album Hot Fuss in 2004, was never released as a single, the track spawned discussion throughout the band's fan base. In various interviews the band has explained that the song is part of a group of three songs, which they refer to as ``the murder trilogy.'' The first, titled ``Leave the Bourbon on the Shelf,'' tells the story of a relationship, with a woman named Jennifer, gone wrong. The song was not released on an album, however, until 2007's Sawdust, a compilation of the band's covers, remixes, rare recordings, and B-sides. The second song in the trilogy, ``Midnight Show,'' also appears on Hot Fuss. It is in this track that the murder actually occurs: ``I took my baby's breath beneath the chandelier / Of stars in atmosphere / And watch her disappear.'' ``Jenny Was a Friend of Mine'' is the final installment in the series. In this song, the narrator has been arrested and is being questioned by the police (``I know my rights, I've been here all day and it's time /
For me to go, so let me know if it's all right''). Fans debate about whether or not the character ever shows remorse for his actions.
