Travis - Why Does It Always Rain On Me? - Lyrics Meaning

This song was written by frontman Fran Healy and it was a hit for the popular Scottish band in 1999.

The title could easily have been inspired simply by everyday life in Scotland as, after all, it's a country well known for its wet climate but the lyrics take us to a far darker place than a wet day in Glasgow.

The lines, `Why does it always rain on me? Is it because I lied when I was seventeen?' are almost comical but it soon becomes painfully evident that the person asking the questions in the song isn't seeing any humor in life at all.

We can all identify with feeling miserable at times, and those of us who live in Britain know just how much yet another rainy day can drag you down, but the lines, `Even when the sun is shining, I can't avoid the lightening,' let us know we're listening to someone who's having more than just a bad-hair-day; and then we're hit with, `I can't stand myself...' Now we're all feeling his depression! This is a song about someone who's on the edge and considering giving up on life.

It has been said that Healy actually wrote these lyrics when on a trip to Israel, a country well known for its dry climate - it rained!
