What boring weebs. I mean pretty much all anime is descended from Disney anyway.

I've tried, not that hard, but shonen anime tends to bore me stupid. One Piece is a notable exception though. In three days I watched over fifty episodes a little while ago. Such a fun series.

Mister batlord, can you possibly recommend any wholesome 1990s/early 2000s anime series about magical witch girls? I began one last year but I cannot recall the name, or the entire plot for the life of me.

And have you ever seen Belladonna of Sadness? I've been trying to hunt it down to no avail; will just have to buy the dvd I suppose.

I don't really watch much in the way of magical girl animes. I grew up on Sailor Moon as much as the next embarrassing weeb but I never really followed up on it. The only one I've watched any of recently was Madoka Magica, and... I think that's about to go to a bad place. Would recommend though.

Actually, knowing you, you might be totally into a deconstructionist magical girl anime with tripped out visuals. It's pretty much unlike any magical girl anime I've ever seen and would probably be ace on some good drugs.

If you've ever wondered how it would look if the makers of Evangelion made a short film that pitted a Playboy bunny against Darth Vader and a Xenomorph with ELO playing, then this is what you've been waiting for.

I likely would! That one looks pretty neat. I definitely have not been super impressed with any of the modern formulaic magical girl animes I've gotten glimpses of. (and, really, the one I was thinking of was focused on just a single vaguely-magical-girl-- the other characters were forest folk or something..? And there was a scientist? I don't remember. It seemed more family-oriented too. And no it's not Princess Mononoke-- that's a movie, obviously, which everyone already loves and knows about) I vastly prefer the animation style of older series. It also helps if the female protagonists are not unbelievably stupid and don't speak in a creepy baby voice.

I haven't really watched any anime in that specific like sub genre but I ended up coming across this list when I googled but I don't even know if you have checked these out already or not.

Well, pretty much all Japanese female voice actors speak in at least a higher pitched voice than seems normal to Westerners. I don't know if this is true to Japanese women or just an anime thing, but there aren't any deep-voiced women in Madoka Magica. And I mention the Japanese voice cast because I would not watch the show dubbed, as American voice acting in girl animes is just embarrassing since they try to emulate "cute girl" voices and it's just awkward.

I'll also say that the clip I posted wasn't even half as weird as many of the visuals in the anime, it's just the best I could find from as far into the show as I currently am. There's **** in there that is just plain ****ing odd. Like the animated representation of magazine collages odd.

Oh, no I was more referring to the ones (non-dubbed ones too) where the female characters are constantly falling and going "EEUUWAAHHH!!!" and rarely speaking in full coherent sentences, is all. (Though I realize that those aren't necessarily the majority. But I like any of the odd & whimsical/cerebral 80s, 90s and very early 2000s anime series overall based on what I've seen)

edit: thanks, djchameleon; I'll have a look at the list.

Yeah there's none of that in Madoka Magica. It's not a show for tween girls to project themselves onto a protagonist, but very much a cerebral show with the trappings of a magical girl anime. I'm honestly not sure what it succeeds at being, cause it's not a show I would ever recommend to a girl looking for another show like Sailor Moon, since it might not be appropriate for a girl under a certain age and wouldn't give them what they were looking for anyway, but I guess it just succeeds at being itself. It's definitely a unique show.

And notice that Madoka Magica is second on that list, only losing out to a Hayao Miyazaki film, and who doesn't come in second to Hayao Miyazaki?
