For me it would depend on what kind of film they were making.

If they were doing the romantic comedy of the American version just based in London then perhaps Simon Pegg would be good for that.

If they were doing a more faithful version of the book i'd choose more of a method actor who could do comedy rather than a comic actor. My first choice would be Julian Rhind Tutt.

I love the movie - it also holds some sentimental value for me. I read the book, but, it's actually one of the few movies I like better than the book.
