Star Wars: Rogue One

Posted this in the movie hype thread, but since it's Star Wars, it deserves its own thread. Here's the official teaser trailer, which was released on April 7.

Discuss...

Okay, so my big thing is that "Rogue One" implies Rogue Squadron. To anyone who doesn't know what that is, Rogue Squadron were the pilots fighting the AT-AT's at the beginning of Empire Strikes Back. One of the pilots was in Return of the Jedi, but I don't remember if Rogue Squadron itself was ever referenced in the movie, so its presence in the official canon is very minimal.

But for those steeped in the Expanded Universe (which is no longer canon), Rogue Squadron is legendary. It was formed by Luke Skywalker after the Battle of Yavin (the end of A New Hope) but before Empire Strikes Back as the elite X-Wing squadron in the Rebellion. Anyone who isn't nobody will remember them from the Rogue Squadron video game on the N64, they had their own comic series which took place between the first and second movies, and went on to become the heroes of some of the only "good" books from the EU. So they have a storied history that any true Star Wars nerd will be intimately familiar with.

But that is all gone now that the Extended Universe is no longer canon. So if this movie is alluding to what it might be alluding to, then whatever Rogue Squadron is or will be is completely up in the air. I'm betting that one of the characters in the trailer might be Wedge Antilles, who was Luke Skywalker's second-in-command until he left to train with Yoda, after which he was the long-time leader of Rogue Squadron, the second best pilot in all of the Rebellion, and one of the most beloved characters in all the EU. He even had bit parts in all three movies of the original trilogy, so he's still canon.

If this movie is going to have anything to do with Rogue Squadron, then I am stoked, but if I'm being had, then no matter how good this movie turns out to be, I will be at least somewhat disappointed.

I heard that Forest Whitaker's character is called Rogue. So that might be the source of the name. Maybe it means he's the person who established the first Rogue Squadron or something. Anyway, I think the movie looks really good.

The Batlord 04-11-2016 01:14 PM

I wouldn't hate that idea, except that Forrest Whitaker's dialogue in the trailer was so lame and forced. They're only a few lines, but they made me wince.

I thought he looked and sounded great, like some crazy old soldier who's been stranded alone at a forgotten outpost for decades.

He's Forrest Whitaker, so I am certainly not counting him out, but his dialogue sounded like awkward, trailer bait. I'm hoping that the rest of his part is better written, cause he's ****ing Forrest Whitaker, and Forrest Whitaker being crazy would be awesome in a more war-focused, non-Jedi Star Wars movie, which is what this looks like.

Oh, and the guy with the space stick kicking ass in the trailer? Donnie Yen. So yeah, Donnie Yen will be kicking ass in a Star Wars movie. That's some ****ing ****.

Key 04-11-2016 01:54 PM

I'm so ****ing excited

The Batlord 04-11-2016 02:00 PM

Dude, I've heard rumors that Darth Vader will be in this movie, and Donnie Yen is fighting stormtroopers in the trailer.

Donnie Yen vs Darth Vader.

djchameleon 04-11-2016 03:21 PM

****, I ****ed at the thought of Wedge Antilles popping up in this movie. I really hope they do some fan service and mention him in some way. I read all of those Rogue Squadron books back in the day.

idk about Darth Vader being in this though. They teased him a little bit with a silhouette but I'm not looking forward to him being in it. They seem to want to focus on that guy in the white cape walking over water and ****.

Like I said, I think the guy they kept teasing, with the two, green dots on his uniform in the Rebellion might be Wedge.

The dude with the white cape was in the trailer for all of two seconds. I don't care about making Darth Vader the villain, but just imagine if all these normal humans make it through the movie, barely getting through stromtroopers, doing all sorts of crazy **** to fulfill their impossible mission, in the very last thirty minutes, all of a sudden have to deal with the force of nature that is a Dark Lord of the Sith.

I don't want Vader to be a "character", I just want him to redeem his lameness at the end of Revenge of the Sith by being the ever-loving god damn most badass merciless mother****er ever to be seen in a Star Wars movie.

Yeah but the thing is we already know the outcome of this movie and how it's going to finish. They can either go dark and have everyone just end up dying in a showdown like you want to see which I don't think they will. Or they will have them make it out in a last minute ditch and get the plans to Leia just in time.

The only problem is whether or not Disney is willing to go that extra mile and make with the killy killy. No matter how bad this movie is, if the last thirty or twenty minutes are Darth Vader being as badass a mother****er as we all dreamed he could be, then it will all be worth it.

I wouldn't put it past Disney to actually follow through with a bit of murder. I was a bit shocked to even see blood in Episode 7. It was a bit strange.

Some cheesy dialogue but I have to admit, this movie looks fantastic.

So long as it has the Vader we've been waiting to see since the ending credits of Return of the Jedi I will be at least half won over. So long as Darth Vader is a thundering badass with little to no reference to the Anakin Skywalker of the prequel trilogy I will be a happy man, if only for his scenes.

Please, god, we've humanized him enough. After forty years it's time to be self-indulgent and use him to show off just how awesome the Dark Side and red lightsabers really are.

I sincerely hope it does well on all fronts. I still think The Force Awakens is amazing and although I'm not traditionally a huge fan of spin offs, this one could be good.

HYPE

This trailer is literally on par with The Force Awakens trailer in terms of how exciting it has me. I can't ****ing wait now.

bob. 10-13-2016 02:56 PM

Oh yeah. This will be seen at the first viewing in my city

I'm as excited maybe more as I was with The Force Awakens.

duga 10-13-2016 03:19 PM

I actually think it's great how they've handled the EU...it's not written off, they are "legends". The galaxy is a big place, so surely the stories of these larger than life heroes are embellished or altogether made up by the people living in it. A legend also implies there is a hint of truth to it, so the writers can cherry pick the stuff from the EU that they like. I think it's win win for everyone.

That said, when I first heard about the spin offs, I wasn't too excited. It seemed like it would be Star Wars overkill. But now that the trailers have been out...holy ****, this may be better than TFA.

If they don't make some Obi-Wan movies at some point, I'm gonna be upset. Ewan McGregor has already said he wants to do it.

I really hope this happens. Ewan McGregor is the perfect Obi-Wan it'd be a crime not to.

The Batlord 10-13-2016 03:24 PM

Liam Neeson is the perfect Obi-Wan. Ewan McGregor was just a'ight.

Qui-Gon was the one who discovered and took in Anakin, and was developing a much more fatherly relationship to him than Ewan McGregor's Obi-Wan, who was more of a big brother, and only trained the boy out of obligation to his dead master. Their deteriorating relationship during Anakin's fall to the Dark Side would have been much more compelling if it were in the context of a father/son dynamic, along with the greater feelings of responsibility that Qui-Gon would have had.

Also, Qui-Gon was just so much more Obi-Wan-esque than Ewan McGregor was.

I always felt the Obi-Wan and Anakin relationship was more of a best friendship which made it even more saddening when it destroyed Anakin. Though, Attack of the Clones made it pretty clear that Anakin didn't respect him even though he noted that Obi-Wan was the closest thing to a father he's ever had.

Considering the father/son conflict in the original trilogy it also would have made it a better parallel.

Yeah, I guess so. I still like the Obi-Wan / Anakin relationship though because it made the fight at the end of Revenge of the Sith far more stimulating.

The Batlord 10-13-2016 04:17 PM

1. That fight was over-choreographed crap with obnoxious and boring special effects.

2. The emotional aspect of the fight would have still been better with Qui-Gon. It also would have been better had Obi-Wan and Anakin had more than, what, 30 minutes of screen-time together throughout the entire trilogy?

I disagree with your first point but I completely agree with the second point. Seeing Qui Gon do more with the force would have been badass.

Get an orange wig and sneak in through the front door in a military outfit. I heard that worked for someone when The Dark Knight Rises opened.
