Briks finds something on Bandcamp

Artist: Kairon; IRSE!
Album: Ujubasajuba
Year: 2014
Genre: Shoegaze

I was just minding my own business, browsing Rateyourmusic, when I had a look at the main page. Among the reviews on the left was an album cover that caught my attention: a crude illustration of some blue, grinning creature enjoying a drink of what might be blood. The reviewer called it “brutal post-rock”, and I immediately thought of Deafheaven. So I looked the band up, found them on Bandcamp, and downloaded the album.

The first thing I heard when putting it on was some hard drums, reinforcing my expectations of something extreme metal-tinged, but when the guitars kicked in, the first that came to my mind was Oasis. Yup. But that quicky passed, as it then evolved into something unlike anything I'd ever heard before. The sound was overall washed-out with lots of reverb, the guitars were mellow, but regularly turned into crushing walls of noise and distortion, and in midst of it all were the vocals, dreamy and ghost-like, singing lyrics in... Finnish, I assume? The band is from Finland, so that makes sense. I'm not going to talk about each track, as everything on this sounds pretty similar, but I'm praising the album as a whole. Go listen to it, right now. It's on Bandcamp, and you can download it for free (though I guess the band would appreciate it if you spared them a few name your price-dollars). I don't know how this holds up against the shoegaze classics, as I have pretty much no knowledge of the genre, but I dig it anyway.

4.5/5

I'll go and get this album just for that album cover, it's pretty rad. But if I don't like this Briks, though I am sure I will, I'll hunt you down and force pop-tarts with mustard on them down your throat.

I kid, haha! Now, off to get this album.

It has some distorted guitars, but that's literally the only "brutal" thing about it. Do check it out, though. It's no less than amazing.

Briks' 2000th post

Artist: Ozzy Osbourne
Album: The Ultimate Sin
Year: 1986
Genre: Heavy/glam metal

Wpnfire (grats on getting an avatar, bro) asked me to listen to and review this album. I listened to Blizzard of Ozz a while back, and it striked me as inconsistent and even annoying at times. Randy Rhoads' guitar work was excellent, but the songs were all average, and Ozzy's vocal performance pretty much sucked. This left me with a pretty bad impression of Ozzy's solo career, so I had my doubts about this. But here goes:

Randy Rhoads had died a few years back, so obviously he isn't featured on the album, but Jake E. Lee is a pretty impressive guitarist as well. A pop element has been added to the songs, and it kind of works. It's better than Blizzard, anyway. Most of the tracks are decent, though not in any way moving, but four of them are better than the others: "Never Know Why", "Killer of Giants" (though I don't agree with Wpn on it being an anthem for the ages), "Shot in the Dark" and "Secret Loser". Especially that last one. It's hella catchy and has made its way into my old-school metal playlist, even though it's pretty cheesy (like the rest of the album).

3/5

I've used the clip several times in reaction posts, but I didn't find it in GIF format before now. Prepare for lots of obnoxious GIF posting from me in the future. And yeah, Blizzard is totally overrated. All-time heavy metal masterpiece my ass.

Haiku reviews are a very clever way to write short and sweet reviews. Props man.
