One of 2016’s sad disappointments was The Weeknd’s Starboy. Beauty Behind the Madness had me hoping we’d found our next Prince but with Starboy suddenly The Weeknd was suffering from erectile dysfunction. Not good for music that hangs its hat on a hard dick.

Farewell, Starlite! by Francis and the Lights

Metal, hip hop, noise, ambient, drone, and even free jazz can speak to me just by being what’s expected by a fan of the genre. But there’s no formula for pop music. Maybe I don’t spend enough time expressing my appreciation for it but good pop music is an incredible feat. Even if it’s just the sound that’s pop, music that sneaks into the genre without really meeting the definitive, even eponymous quality of being popular.

This was released as a free stream, guest stars Kanye West and Bon Iver and was met with sparse luke warm reviews. My fans understand that I have the final say on what’s good and what isn’t. If it simplifies things for you think of it like this: I don’t like it because it’s good; it’s good because I like it. I declare what’s unassailable, what’s not up for debate, what sucks, all of it. Why discussions carry on after my verdicts is beyond me. Why discuss the case after the sentence has been carried out?

Phil Collins was a great pop star once upon a time. He put popstar sparkle on a prog band even when he wasn’t singing. That’s what Francis and the Lights is: Phil Collins before he sucked. And FatL has done this great thing in the beautiful wilderness of 2016 like a lightning bug adding its little touch of magic.

You should start putting Youtube videos with your posts tbh. I could look up your ****, or I could just click play on a video I don't have to look for. Would probably vastly increase the amount of people who check this **** out. Not gonna pretend like I've never felt vague interest in one of your posts only to not feel like tracking any of the music down.
