Question Trying to Remember: Live Televised Version of "Living in America"

Sometime in the late 1980s or early 1990s, the Grammys--or another televised music event of comparable prominence--featured someone doing a version of James Brown's "Living in America."

I vaguely remember that the singer was:

- African-American,
- Female, and
- Had a powerful voice.

I _think_ she was wearing what looked to me at the time like a white karate uniform and had big hair, though not necessarily a 'fro.

Anyone have any idea who I might be thinking of? I was a kid at the time I originally heard this performance, but I'm 99% sure it'd be someone I've heard of by now.
