well, after I watched "Live at Pompeii", i conclude they were all pretty bland and faceless as people

That's exactly how they wanted to be and still do. Floyd are one of the very few bands that let the music do their talking without ever coming across as pretentious. No showboating, no 'look at how good I am', just 4 introspective guys (at the time) playing great music. Apart from the debut and the gatefold vinyl of Meddle the band didn't even bother putting photos of themselves on albums until AMLOR because they just weren't interested.

Live At Pompeii is ****ing brilliant, why make a live video with thousands of fans when you can just zone out in the ruins of an ancient city and just play music?

the music is good, no doubt, i think in the beginning of "A Saucerful of Secrets" live, they probably pioneered noise-rock

but they come across as pretty vanilla in personalities

It doesn't matter. It's not about showboating to the crowd, it's about expressing everything through music. Like telling a story through instruments.

i'd still like my favourite musicians to have some sort of "personality" - e.g. Tom Waits, Hendrix, Beefheart, etc

Roger Waters had a personality. He was just a massive effhead.

Pink Floyd Reportedly Set to Release New Album This Fall

New album set to be released in October. I'm not getting too excited for whatever they release, especially since Roger Waters' presence on the album hasn't been confirmed yet. I pray it's not Division Bell Part Two, Division Bell can suck my division balls.
