Grudgingly, I would have to pick The Ramones.

I think the Ramone's consistancy and amazingly catchy tunes, and of course, upbeat additude beats out The Clash's honesty and innovation.

Pistols for impact
Ramones for longevity

The Sex Pistols are overrated, they had good lyrics but their music sucked.

I don't think its even possible for a punk fan to talk trash about the Sex Pistols without somehow contradicting himself.

Yes, they were not very good musicians, and yes they were primarly just in it for the money. Who cares? Their music is just too damn awesome not to like.

I think both bands needed each other.

I don't know about the Pistols but The Ramones were a huge influence on The Clash & other punk bands and there was certainly an underground buzz about bands like Television & Patti Smith going on in the UK.
But on the other hand without the UK bands achieving mainstream notoriety so quickly after punk broke those New York bands would have probably carried on playing shitty small clubs in the U.S. like they had already been doing since the early 70s and probably would never have got the exposure they did..
It's no coincidence that as soon as punk broke in London those New York bands were flocking over to do their first European tours.
