I think both bands needed each other.
I don't know about the Pistols but The Ramones were a huge influence on The Clash & other punk bands and there was certainly an underground buzz about bands like Television & Patti Smith going on in the UK. But on the other hand without the UK bands achieving mainstream notoriety so quickly after punk broke those New York bands would have probably carried on playing shitty small clubs in the U.S. like they had already been doing since the early 70s and probably would never have got the exposure they did.. It's no coincidence that as soon as punk broke in London those New York bands were flocking over to do their first European tours. |
