The lyrics definitely get comical but I think he is trying to express a real sadness. I'm probably biased though from seeing the documentary thing that came with my CD (all filmed by Jonze?). He's definitely self conscious like in his description of how his gay rumors began - he's practically cringing. He also seems generally embarrassed and ashamed about how his career turned out.

Mockingbird by Eminem is kinda sad/depressing, and is a decent song to boot.

Yeah, I have that Spike Jonze DVD too and I do agree that once I watched that documentary the song seemed a lot sadder. Some of it was pretty funny though, like the part where he's talking about how his mother was mad at them for just dropping by without calling so she didn't have a chance to clean.

That album The Loneliest Punk is pretty good IMHO. Have you given the whole thing a listen?

I say sad rap is something that comes only when there isn't enough weed.

Not totally "sad" but Eminem has done some pretty beautiful stuff. Examples like.. well.. Beautiful. Stan is a pretty sad song, and Hailie's Song is one of the most beautiful recordings i've ever heard.

O yes - I've had the CD/DVD for a while. But I haven't listened to it for a bit and this thread reminded me of it.

The last few times I listened to it, though, I pretty much skipped back and forth b/w the 2 standouts: Today's the Day and What's Up Fatlip?

I'm a pretty big fan of "Fat Leezy" too.

1st track? - yea it's a good opener. I used to love some of the songs so much that I would listen to the whole thing enraptured. But when it comes down to it I probably only really like about 1/3. But those are some great songs - they top everything that Pharcyde did post-Fatlip by a lot.

I always thought it was sad when Krayzie Bone says...

"What's up with this murder y'all?
See my little cousin was hung
Somebody was really wrong
Everybody want to test us, dog"

Followed later by...

"Can somebody, anybody tell me why?
Heyyy...
Can somebody, anybody tell me why we die, we die?
I don't want to die"
