I'll go with Jack Bruce of Cream, or Jaco Pastorius. Always my top two favorites.

I just got turned on to Jaco Pastorius by the band I interviewed last week. He is awesome, not really my style of music but there is no denying the man was brilliant.

I am of course a huge Rush fan, so Geddy Lee is still the best in my book.

^ Yeah I second that.
Rush are amazing and Geddy is really talented. Playing the bass, keyboard and singing at the same time is so cool.

Also, Steve Harris- I'm a huge Maiden fan
Lemmy from motorhead

and Cliff Burton was really talented too.

Charles Mingus, Peter Hook and Kim Deal (not the most technically amazing bassists, but their lines were killer), Scott LeFaro, Stanley Clarke.

Rock/Metal Favourites:
Flea (RHCP), Les Claypool (Primus), Steve Harris (Iron Maiden), Dirk Lance (Incubus), Geddy Lee (Rush), Tony Choy (Atheist), Tony Levin (King Crimson)
Tim Commerford (RATM), JPJ (Led Zep), John Entwistle (The Who)and the list goes on...

Other Favourites: Jaco Pastorius, Victor Wooten, Marcus Miller, Stu Hamm, James Jamerson

So overall, my fav bassist ever would have to be Flea.
