Styles of music (blues, indie, jazz, metal, rock)

Can anybody explain to me what they think differences between these styles of music: Grunge, Goth, Thrash, Indie, Light Rock, Heavy Metal etc... (note these are all guitar based)
Other than their 'image' they are all the same. I'll explain to you why, but let's hear your views.
See that Jazz, and Classical are excluded. I was thinking about throwing Blues into the list. It's definitely on the fence.
