Try listening to metal outside of your uncle's collection? I'd highly recommend Freak Kitchen if you want something both metallic and thought provoking.

Axl Rose is probably the most talented rock/metal singer in the past 20 years. Also, alot of the death metal bands have good instrumentals but then you have the cookie monster crap. There might as well not be any lyrics, so it's totally pointless. And I really like Coheed's singer because he reminds me of Geddy Lee.

Axl Rose is possibly the worst singer I've ever heard.

Crowquill is cool. Sorta. I hate the Fall Of Troy. And Joy Division. And West Side Story.

LOL! having "rock" in that sentence makes it completely ridiculous... i think the guy from fall out boy might have a better voice (and by better i mean less annoying) than axl rose

oh and general rule of thumb: people that go by overly masculine nicknames such as axl or slash or synister or anything like that are not worthy of any title containing the phrase "most talented"

I don't like Portnoy's work in Dream Theater really - it seems like he has a "I never met a fill I didn't like" style as someone on progarchives described it.

As a bassist, I think Myung is brilliant though. He exercises far more restraint than anyone in the band.
Bad vocals tend to turn me off and distract me from the rest of the music. That's why I prefer Labrie's clear voice as opposed to the screaming metal bands that just annoy me. If Labrie's diction were better I would appreciate him more, but I realize pronunciation in that range may be be restricted.

Screaming vocals/growls are an acquired taste...you'll generally hate it to begin with, but perceive more and you'll definitely get over it and start to like it.
For example, many ppl are attracted to Opeth due to Mikael Akerfeldt's clean vocals at times. Although the combination of both is what makes them good, I think his growls are pretty awesome and equally on par or better than his singing.
Point being, even screaming vocals/growls can be good...just a matter of taste and the way you take it imo.

Everyone has their own personal preferences towards what kind of vocals they like with the music. So it's tough to have a unanimous vote towards one way or another. I'm not an Axl Rose fan but his vocals work with what GN'R is doing. They could have a better vocalist but it wouldn't be GN'R.

I think Billy Talent would be pretty tight if they didn't have the singer or even if the singer changed his style. I don't know I just don't like the singing its sound's whiney to me.
