There aren't many bands I used to hate and now love. Usually it's the other way around. Here goes though:

New York Dolls (I still think Rundgren overproduced their first album, but I appreciate them a lot more now)

The Doors (well, I hated them, then I fell in love with them, and now I hate them again. But the concept's the same)

The Kinks (in my defense, all I had was their wretched first album)

I used to hate all female singers (except for Janis and Bjork) period and I just got into Nellie McKay.

What was wrong with them that you didn't like em'?

In general, I have a lot less interest in vocalists. I use the term loosely here for recording artists who don't play anything, who don't write, or compose, or do much... There are so many great ones that are multi-talented, so why should I bother listening to one-faceted people, when I can have, let's say, John Fogerty instead?

I guess it's an industry problem, but women only rarely write their own songs, so I can't be bothered. Perhaps my choice of words were a little harsh, but I have respect for a couple, doesn't mean I like their voice. I'm really more into deeper voices with a lot of character anyway, which doesn't help the girls' case. Like Sarah McLauchlin, I respect, but her voice bores me.

But I'm quite impressed with the Nellie McKay's songwriting abilities so far.

I guess it could be based on preference...But I know A LOT of female vocalists that write their own stuff and are damn good at it if I do say so myself....But a bunch of "mainstream" artists don't write their stuff.

I think female vocalists are pretty underrated. Bjork, Beth Gibbons, Grace Slick, PJ Harvey, Stevie Nicks, Janis Joplin and Ann Wilson are all win for me.

I also find that most of my favorite male vocalists tend to be of the higher register (Falsetto) and therefore have somewhat feminine characteristics. Like Robert Plant, Freddie Mercury, Jeff Buckley, Thom Yorke, Jon Anderson and Todd Rundgren.

I find that I'm less interested in low register vocals, like baritone and bass, I don't like vocals to be too deep or masculine. Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix and Tom Waits are some exceptions to the rule.

I would have given anything to date Bjork when she was younger.
