Megadeth may be more technical but old -school metallica smokes them overall.

No band can control the number of sales by simply changing the style. Metallica is way more important to metal than Megadeth. Megadeth is just the "Dave Mustaine's Band", always in the shadow of metallica. At first Megadeth seems as an act of spite form Dave Mustaine, until Rust in peace and Countdown to extinction which contains the most stable and most talented group of musician that megadeth ever had, but Metallica was always lightyears ahead in innovation and experimentation.

Metallica's decline in my opinion, is a controlled chaos. They know who they are and what they represented in the eighties. But this material wouldn't worth anything if they hadn't change their style. This is when you start to appreciate romantically the old stuff creating a nostalgia effect. Their change was necessary.

In a summary. Megadeth NEVER was bigger or stronger than Metallica. Never ever.
The Black album is where they radically changed their style and that is their biggest selling album by far. It also happens to be an awful album and the complete antithesis of what Metallica seemingly were about. Metallica were one of the major players in dragging Metal into the mainstream and for that we can be grateful, however they seemed to forget their roots and allowed themselves to be manipulated by the corporate machine. Megadeth didnt have the same impact and Mustaine can come across as an ego ridden tat bag sometimes but he is certainly no worse than Lars Ulrich in this respect. Megadeth have generally stuck to the same musical formula throughout their career and I find their music much more palatable these days compared to Metallica.

Mustaine may be a complete douche but still it dosen't really matter considering the band's songs are good and they have been consistent with their genre. For the most part. Can't say that about Metallica.

Ugh. That actually is a really hard decision.

I agree with you on the guitar licks, but I find Kirk Hammett to be a much more talented guitarist than Mustaine. And some of the stuff Mustaine writes is a little weird, like he's trying to break conventions without any direction. Also, Megadeth never really had an apocalyptic album like Metallica has had (Ride the Lightning and the Black Album).

It really is a toss up. I say Metallica because Dave Mustaine is a Flyers fan. =p

I prefer Metallica's work after Kill Em All. The Black Album, Master of Puppets, and Ride the Lightning are my favorite albums

Kirk is a more versatile and technical guitarist than Mustaine. But Marty beats them both by a mile

Metallica. They created the path that most heavy bands follow today. Megadeth is good too, but just not as creative in my opinion. People criticize Metallica for changing their sound over the years, but that's what all artists do. In fact, since most credit Megadeth for staying true to form, they would have to come second to Slayer in that regard as well. The last few Megadeth records have been sub-par as well. Go figure. From the short clips I've heard of the new Metallica record, it will bring them back somewhat closer to the original sound, perhaps around '89-'91. Just my two cents.

I really don't get all The Black Album hate, is it really that big of a deal? They made a more stripped down and simple hard rock record, and it's a good simple hard rock record, who cares if it's not old Metallica? Sure everything after it was bad, but I hate it when people call an album bad based on personal reasons and "what it started" rather than the actual damn music.

AC/DC are criticized for sticking to a formula, everyone else gets harshly criticized for changing it.

Megadeth is my favorite of the two. I love their solo in "Sleepwalker"
