Rock/Metal negative effects

So Im doing this thesis on whether or not rock/metal music has a negative effects on its listeners and/or society. Now I lsten to rock and metal so I dont think it has a negative effect but from the research that I've done a lot of people seem to think that it does. I was wondering if I could get your opinion if you think rock/metal have a negative effect and/or why people think that.

Negative is subjective, so yes, sometimes, depending on who you are percieving what effect.

For me personally no.. buut i s'pose it kinda goes down to the genre and stuff like more towards the gothic/hardcore side of metal/rock i can see people getting effected my the music if they get too much into it yehh...

Just really depends on the persons personality id say

No. Where musical becomes political or life-changing is usually with younger people and they latch on to stuff that expresses their views, their pain etc. I think people get frustrated, then express frustration through music, not vice versa. In other words, music is not what causes that frustration, it just vents it.

Although there are exceptions to every rule, that's my general view.

Other than that, rock and metal are extremely general descriptions of music. If I listen to Deep Purple or Satyricon one day, I don't think it has a harmful effect.

Religious music has a negative effect on society. So does some rock and roll. See: Limp Bizkit.

Those bands were birthed by society ;)

Bashing them is like treating a symptom rather than the disease.

edit :

Like certain symptoms, I agree they do cause disgust, nausea, pain and other negative effects, though.

some say that if you play rock/metal song to the plants, they'll grow not too good but I never try it myself :-)

Guybrush 03-27-2009 08:53 AM

On the show mythbusters, they tried playing different genres of music to plants growing under the same conditions. The metal plants were the ones that grew the most ..

I don't really think that means metal is good for plants, but I think it might indicate it doesn't matter. :p

Music is supposed to significantly decrease aggressive behaviour of chimpanzees in a lab behaviour, but I'm not sure what the genre studied was. There's an article on it here. My girlfriend who took a lab animal course claimed that rats responded positively to metal music, but I don't have a source to back it up!
