Default Quesiton - Punk Bands

I hear people say Blink isn't punked.. and heard other bands arent.. my question is..

is the only reason they are not punk is because they are signed to a record lable? What defines a 'punk' band?

I don't really know. I see polls up on the Internet saying that bands like Blink 182 are punk bands, but hardcore punk people say they're not. Maybe someone here could shed some light on the subject.

It is not because they are signed or on mtv, it is what they sing about. Punk bands aren't about singing about their girlfriends dumped them, they sing about more important things, for example politics. A lot of people seem to think punks are dumb, but actually they are smarter than a lot of people. I hope this clears things up.

Here's a thought; let's stop labeling music and fighting over what genre a certain band is, and start listening to whatever pleases our ears no matter what anyone thinks of it! ;)

I forgot to mention that punk bands have more of a raw sound to them, and not so much pop. Most people who like Blink-182 don't like real punk bands because they are a lot harder and faster. If you want I will post some lyrics of good punk songs.

If most people don't like both, then i guess I am one of a select few...
I don't know why, but Blink's type of music is just fun.

ANTI-FLAG LYRICS

"One People, One Struggle"

The people, united, will never be defeated.
The people, united, will never be defeated.
The people, united, will never be defeated.
The people, united, will never be defeated.
The people, united, will never be defeated.
The people, united, will never be defeated.

Time to see the world as a whole!
Time to light the fire with the fuel!
That's a concience movement,
in our hearts.
Everywhere you look red white and blue
Everywhere you look they're fooling you.

Every revolutionary
was once considered an enemy
Cointel underminded the life
Of Dr. Martin Luther King
Everywhere you look red white and blue
Everywhere you look they're fooling you.

One people, one struggle!
Stand United, Stand Peacful!
One people, one struggle.

Time to see the world as a whole.
Time to light the fire with the fuel.
That's a concience movement,
in each and every one of your hearts!
Everywhere you look red white and blue
Everywhere you look they're fooling you.

One people, one struggle!
Stand United, Stand Peacful!
One people, one struggle.

One people, one struggle!
Stand United, Stand Peacful!
One people, one struggle.

The union,
Of free thinking,
Colors don't,
Mean liberty.
The union,
Of free thinking,
The union,
Of free thinking.

The people, united, will never be defeated.
The people, united, will never be defeated.
The people, united, will never be defeated.
The people, united, will never be defeated!

One people, one struggle!
Stand United, Stand Peacful!

One people, one struggle!
Stand United, Stand Peacful!

One people, one struggle!
Stand United, Stand Peacful!

One people, one struggle!
Stand United, Stand Peacful!

The people, united, will never be defeated.
The people, united, will never be defeated.
The people, united, will never be defeated.
The people, united, will never be defeated!

Here's one of my new favourites (The lyrics are a little off I think, but oh well):
The Separation of Church and Skate (NOFX)

Lost in a sea of combat boots, flush the bouncers with wasted youth
When did punk rock become so safe, when did the scene become a joke
The kids who used to live for beer and speed now want their fries and coke
Cursing and flipping birds are not allowed, in fact let’s keep noise levels down

Must separate the church and skate

When don’t we put pad on the kids, helmets, head gear and mouth pieces
They we could pad the floor and walls, put cameras inside bathroom stalls
We make sure only nice bands play, and we could sing my country ’tis of thee sweet land of liberty

When did punk rock become so safe
I know it wasnt duane or fletcher, who put up the barricades
Like a skate in the heart, somehow we got driven apart

I want conflict I want dissent, I want the scene to represent
Our hatred of authority, our fight against complacency
Stop singing songs about girls and love, you killed the owl you freed the dove
Confrontation and politics replaced with harmonies and shticks
When did punk rock become so tame, these ****ing bands all sound the same
We want our fights we want our thugs, we want our burns we want our drungs
Where is the violent apathy, these ****ing records are rated g

ANTI-FLAG LYRICS

"Captain Anarchy"

a-n-a-r-c-h-y... he says that for the punk rock scene he'd give his fu*king life but he's only ever paid to see a show once maybe twice instead he stands outside the halls and pan handles for beer then sneaks into the hall to deface the bathroom mirror a-n-a-r-c-h-y...his name is "captain anarchy," but only in his mind a-n-a-r-c-h-y...so punk that he's a poser and he'll be one till he dies you never saw an anarchist with such perfect hair or so many ten dollar spikes, or so much punk rock gear he said he used his welfare checks to buy his boots and plaids in reality it was all paid for by his mom and by his dad a-n-a-r-c-h-y...his name is "captain anarchy," but only in his mind a-n-a-r-c-h-y...he's anarchy incarnate but only in his (mind) you know he just can't see oi! oi! oi! it's up to you and me * * * i don't want to be * * * fighting, let's stride for...some unity!
