wow, this is amazing how clueless alot u are. I cant believe someone actually put evanescence, or creed! What the hell? And some of u dont even know when these artists started. First of all, Coltrane just started his solo career in '59, all of his albums are classics but this is a rock forum after all, i am a coltrane fan tho, and Coltrane was with Miles Davis form '56-'59. And how do ppl not know when the beatles started?? And what the hell is up with the Police cult around here?? Or tears for fears?? What **** is this?? Name me some quality ROCK bands that are influenced by the police or tears for fears? And some just seem ridiculous, I can't believe someone had enough balls to say Sabbath was more influencial than Zeppelin?? I dont think so. MOST every rock band is influenced by Zeppelin, not near as bands are influenced by Sabbath, In metal more i would say for Sabbath or just as equal but in the scheme of things its Zeppelin. And im done, but some of ppls' answers were horrible. Here's my list (in random order):

50's: Chuck Berry, Elvis, Howlin Wolf, Buddy Holly, Muddy Waters
60's: Beatles, Hendrix, Cream, The Who, The Doors
70's: Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, The Clash, Pink Floyd, Kiss
80's: Black Flag, Metallica, AC DC, Van Halen, GN'R
90's: Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pantera, Smashing Pumpkins, RHCP
00's: Audioslave, Velvet Revolver, Mars Volta, A Perfect Circle, SOAD

I can't speak for Tears for Fears, but The Police were the premiere progressive rock band of the eighties. I'm surprised that you, of all people, wouldn't give credit to the influence Stewart Copeland has had on contemporary drummers. Wanna Hear their influence on on a band? Throw on Francis the Mute or any coldplay album.
