I tend to agree with these sentiments. They had two eras, while I would argue that "Orchid" does not feel the same as "Blackwater Park" as they evolved to a peak with "Watershed". The first signs of the current direction of some of the more exclusive 70s prog instruments, like the mellotron, were found in "Ghost Reveries". We shouldn't have been surprised they took this to its musical conclusion: going full metal 70s prog.

It is indeed frustrating to listen to the second era Opeth, although there are some gems on their last album. I can't say the same for Heritage. Sadly it was kind of a foregone conclusion that the growls would be slowly phased out. However, what was so depressing was how it was so sudden a change to no growls at all. While not dissimilar to how My Dying Bride did this with "Angel and the Dark River", Opeth needs to see what they did and transition at least some back to the surprise growl or two in the future. They vocally need to break up the monotony, hopefully they will with the new album in a month. We can hope can't we that they get their fire back....

I've never really gotten into Opeth and not for a lack of trying. Pale Communion seems to be the disc of theirs that bores me the least. Not sure it qualifies as enjoyable to my ears yet. All of their classic pre-heritage, heavy stuff seems sort of like a long, gray dirge to me. Really hard to maintain interest through an entire disc. I still feel like I'm missing the point or something.

I'll check that dictionary, but in the meantime I'm impressed - as is everyone else in the world - by your eloquence, obvious accomplishments and success, and the evidence of your blazingly high intelligence.
