I'm not sure I would list 'hard rock' as a sub-genre of Metal, it's the other way around if anything.

Neither is really part of the other. Metal simply emerged out of hard-rock. You wouldn't have blues as an option for your favourite type of rock, even though rock emerged out of blues.

I like gold and platinum. Especially when they're records with my name on them

I would like to know what people find enjoyable about Grindcore. From what I've heard (Napalm Death, A.C., some myspace garbage) it's nothing more than a bunch of down-tuned guitar chords and really fast drumming accompannying a shreiking/growling vocalist. That's two steps away from noise.

It can be emotionally cathartic?

Grindcore isn't really focused on creating good instrumentals or tasteful music. It's about playing as fast and as loud as you can, screaming at the top of your lungs to get a message out. Not my favorite genre, but I do enjoy bands like Napalm Death and Agoraphobic Nosebleed whenever I'm in a mood for music I want to kick ass to...... or imagine myself kicking ass because, well, I'm listening to it in my truck and there's no ass to kick. It's a, uh, conundrum.

Most of the time I'm not even sure if there IS a message.

Well, in, say, Anal ****'s case, you could say that. They just aim to be the anti-thesis of music, being as offensive as possible and noisy. Grindcore's lyrical themes involved social and political issues, to gore and death, to pornographic themes. Whole range of things.

I don't blame you for not liking grindcore. It kind of is an acquired taste. I know a few extreme metal fans who are into bands like Beneath the Massacre and Necrophagist who can't stand grind.
