Death Doom

Can't find any threads dedicated to one of the most bitchin' varieties of metal. To the stupid, death doom is doom metal with death metal influences (vocals, riffs, and general extremeness) or death metal with doom influences (slow pace, heaviness, need for a blunt). It all depends on which genre the band is originally coming from.

You've got sub-sub-genres as well, such as gothic doom, which more often than not contains a death metal influence, even though many bands end up dropping the DM after a few albums. Basically depressing doom with some influence that sounds gothy (such as symphonic elements, or actual goth rock). Notables include Katatonia, Paradise Lost, Saturnus, My Dying Bride, and Anathema.

You got funeral doom, which is like the death metal equivalent of drone metal. Really slow, really depressing, and really hard for the novice to appreciate since there is often zero dynamics. Just slow... slow... slow riffs. Notables include Thergothon, Skepticism, and Esoteric.

Then you just got regular ass death doom. Nothing fancy, just slow riffs and growling. Perhaps why the base genre is surprisingly underrepresented; as much as I love this **** it is kind of a limiting genre. On the more death metal side you've got Autopsy, Obituary, and Asphyx. On the doom tip you've got Winter, Acid Witch, and Coffins. Too in-between to be called either you've got diSEMBOWELMENT and Unholy.

Death doom is one of the sickest forms of metal out there. Often more abrasive than doom metal, and heavier than death metal, and the focus on atmosphere (different atmospheres for different sub-genres) makes death doom more engaging as well. Whether it's the stink of the grave from bands such as Obituary and Coffins, or the sorrow of My Dying Bride and Paradise Lost, or the nihilism of Esoteric and Skepticism, death doom is a metal genre that deals in feeling just as much as heaviness or brutality.

So you better be listening to this ****.

MDB, early Katatonia, and Thorr's Hammer all rule. Need to explore the genre a little more though.

Get Necro Schizma in your life. First death doom band ever, like a combination of late-80s black/death metal and the slower moments of Hellhammer. Putrid, heavy, and gloriously lo-fi.

Hellhammer cover

This is my dad's favorite extreme metal album I think

He was always going on about how hard Runemagick ruled while I was growing up. And while they are the cream of the crop, I dunno if that's my favorite album. All of them are awesome it doesn't really matter.

The last Hooded Menace album is their best I think, if you're a fan and haven't heard, it brings the death and drips the doom, and if you're not a fan then you must have some kind of chemical imbalance. Their name is Hooded Menace for christ's sake, is there any questioning their slaying?

I dunno why no one's ever talking about Derekta but **** everyone anyway. Then again posers don't like it raw like ODB

Hail Superior Homo,

Nice thread , I dig Death Doom ...here are some of my favorites

diSEMBOWELMENT, Winter, Morgion, Asphyx, Runemagick , Hooded Menace, Coffins, Cianide, Acid Witch, Septic Flesh...and definitely not least of all ... Autopsy, though others may disagree with Autopsy being classified as DD ... I find them to be quite Doomy.

I've talked about these lovely ladies before

I strangely enough prefer Doom and Death metal on their own to them being combined.

Mondo Bungle 08-20-2016 12:47 PM

That's downright loony
