Anybody have recommendations for this sub-genre? Or any ideas about why it is such an overlooked area of music? AFAIK, there's no reason why it shouldn't be as large and popular as, for instance Celtic music or gypsy music? I wonder why doesn't it have more fans and artists?

I don't know about Native American music per se. I do know of Buffy Sainte-Marie who was a pretty decent folk songstress from the sixties and seventies. Her Illuminations albums is a great piece of psychedelic folk.

Was going to mention her. This is good also.

Although neither really belong in this thread, as they're First Nations, or Native Canadians...

^ All these additions are interesting; I especially liked the music from Frownland and the video that goes with P_S's music.
As for Buffy Sainte-Marie, I have hardly thought of her since Now That the Buffalo have Gone made a brief appearance in the Brit pop charts, so I appreciate having a reason to re-appraise her stuff. In terms of genre, I guess she was a Native American who bought into the whiteman's style of (folk) music. In that sense, Moondog is her opposite; being a whitey who, after a formative exposure to Native American culture as a child, explored their rhythms in his music:-

Well, most of us know about Moondog already, but on the topic of Native Americans, perhaps you haven't come across the movie, Powwow Highway. I'd advise you to skip the trailers and spoilers, find the movie if you can and just sit down to watch how life unfolds for one modern, unglamorous Native American. 90 mins well-spent imo.

You basically never heard about anything that native Americans do, at least not internationally.

Not sure if this is hip, but it is beautiful. I'm currently checking to find Link Wray's version...

Default Why aren't the youtube videos working?

Have you heard of Native American rapper LiteFoot? He is also an actor that played the Indian guy in the movie Indian in the Cupboard.

Another Native American group is A Tribe Called Red.

you can download one of their albums for free on their website. The details are in the description of that youtube video.

Also, there is Sacred Spirit. It's New Age/electronic but I thought I would mention it.

EDIT: I have no idea why the Embedded youtube videos are not working here.
