Default Copyright

I once read that if you write a song and you want to copyright it, apparently you just write down the name of the song, the date you wrote the song and your name, put the copyright sign next to it all and then send the bit of paper to yourself via the post.

Can anyone enlighten me about this?

As well, it is said that once the idea strikes you and you write is, it is yours, but we have to protect ourselves a little better than that these days, I expect.
