Best FREE recording software

i need something similar to that of GarageBand but for windows, help?

Check out the screenshots and read up on it.

It's free.

If you need something specifically for recording your guitar and vocals, you can get Audacity. Google it.
Might even be possible to use both programs together creatively.

i have audacity but everytime i try to install LAME it doesn't work

Audacity is not that great of a program at all.

There really aren't any good "free" recording programs, but if you really don't want to spend any money, pirate a copy of Sonar. Even the older versions are pretty decent. To do it right you'll need an interface (the Presonus Firepod is usually what's paired with Sonar, you can also check out the MOTU 8pre. Both can be had for about $150 used), but as long has you have a good (and I mean GOOD) 24 bit soundcard, you'll be able to get better recordings than you would with some crappy free program like Audacity.

True x 2. Unless you have a Mac w/ garageband.

Yea man, I use Sonar 7 PE. I'd recommend it over Pro-tools, but I don't know how solid of a copy someone can get via free download.

I'm still not wanting to upgrade to version 8, because I see a lot of people yelling about the bug introductions over at the sonar forums. But I still want Guitar Rig LE and DEFINITELY want the full version of Dimension that comes with the Sonar upgrade. (Although they STILL never fixed the external FX problem I don't think.)

I personally prefer protools but I will admit that sonar is far more user friendly. A friend of mine that runs his own studio uses Sonar 8 producer edition and it seems pretty solid.

But then again you have to buy the Mac to get it/use it, so in a way you do pay for it.

I just love me that 64bit floating environment in Sonar.
Gets me in trouble when I unknowingly over-drive 32 bit plugins though.

You gotta put the DLL in it's program folder. so C:\program files\audicity ..

That is at least what works for Audiograbber - best free cd -> mp3 software... but for it too you gotta put LAME in separately.
