The Shure SM57 is thought by most to be the cheapest, most durable, most flexible multi-purpose mic in the morld. I once worked with a band that miked their entire drum kit with nothin but 57's.

Yeah, its the "no. 2 pencil" of the live sound engineering world, and they're dirt cheap. The SM58 is the vocal mic equivalent of the 57. perfec investment if you want to start a band and plan on doing any singing.

Studio mics tend to be of higher quality and, subsequently, more expensive......WAY more expensive, but there's nothing wrong with using the mics I reccomended for studio work. Ya' gotta start somewhere, and not a lot of people have $2000 to spend on a vocal mic.
