i've been using d'addario strings for 15 years. i've tried a few other brands in the past and was never satisfied, the other brands usually popped relatively quickly.

i use .10s for standard tuning
.12s or .13s(if i can find them) for tuning down to C
flatwounds for bass, not sure on the gauge but the low B is effing huge.

Anyone ever see a set of 12 guage electric gtr strings with an unwound G?

yup. ernie ball has a pack called 'not even slinky', it's green. .12s with a plain G. although i'm pretty sure those were the strings i was using when both my G and B strings popped simultaneously.

i'm also positive d'addario has sets of .12s with a plain G as i have some on my guitar right now, i just can't find the packaging.

a plain G at that gauge does feel a little weird though.

I'll have to try a set and see what I think.

After the final decision, I'll have the guitar set up for that gauge and shielded.

no worries. i've never dared trying to tune 12s up to standard though. they're a little loose at C, would probably work best at D. crazy nice low tone when it's down 2 steps though.
