These guys are pretty mainstream, I am sure there is some German guy shredding an 8 string bass in his basement, but nobody knows about him... as a bassist, here are a couple, of many I listen too...

I take it you mean Cliff Burton. But to be honest, I think Rob Trujillo is a better bassist than Burton.

I don't know a whole hell of a lot about bass, but Victor Wooten, John Entwistle and Geddy Lee are pretty awesome.
