I saw Arrested Development live and there was this dude that played bass with them. The craziest bass player i've seen. Played the thing like an electric guitar.

I find there are a few good female bassists (in part because there are so many more female bassists than guitarists or drummers). I'm not talking about Kim Gordon or D'Arcy Wretzky (though they were decent). I think Melissa Auf Der Maur is a good bassist, even in comparison to other male bassists.

Kim Deal, buddy. Simple, but very melodic and I believe she was in large part responsible for saving the Pixies from being completely over-the-top grungey-evil sounding.

Off the topic of females:

John Deacon
The cat from The Who was pretty good, although I'm not a big Who fan.

And I wouldn't call Matt Sharp an amazing bass player, but his work on Pinkerton sounds pretty cool to me.
