I have a friend who plays the violin. He picked up the mandolin and could play it almost as well as he played the violin. Apparently they have the same tuning so it is very easy to switch between instruments. Just wanted to throw out some information.

I play Mando - a great little instrument!
Boo Boo - I have little fat fingers too, (been described as "a bunch of wriggling maggots"). My main instrument is bass, and I've learned to adjust my technique to suit the instrument I'm playing. Give it a go - it's worth it!
