If you don't want to buy a left handed guitar and you never played before, just learn to play it upside down.

And there's nothing stopping you getting it altered.

It's not too difficult to have the guitar altered and it shouldn't cost a great deal, by having the nut and the saddle (on the bridge) replaced to accomodate the strings.
That way you can play left handed with the guitar upside down, but with the strings the right way up.

If you wanna play blues or something not to techniqually challenging. Hendrix is a perfect example of this genius with soul and chord progressions but not techniqually great. In the begining the left hand (while playing right handed) is the one that requires more dexterity, but as you get better (most likely into shredding) the right hand requires more and more dexterity until the right hand is the hard part. Like I said for most music it doesn't matter and if you like acoustic rock or modern rock or blues it really doesn't matter but for jazz fusion or shredding and epspecially classical it matters quite a bit.

Red face

Just my crazy idea. Just proceed to learn with your right hand so as to have the opportunity to train left side of your brain. It just a matter of getting used to it. I am a "righty" but I learnt to use left hand (just for fun)to do some of the things. Now, I hold toothbrush with my left hand by default. I can write with left hand with readable handwriting.

The only regret is, I'm not being smarter by using both side of my brain...

Joe Strummer was left handed.

He taught himself how to play right handed.
