Default Question (I NEED HELP!!!!)

to anyone who is in a band, has been to a tryout (as a bassist), or done a bassists try out, I am trying out a bassist for my band but i need some things to ask that would help us exaluate his talent better. any thing from questions to little parts of songs i can have him play. Any suggestions?

well...now that i think about it, if u have any thing on any other instrument other than guitar that would be appreciated as well.

thanks again

why don't you just see if he can play your songs. then, if you can't tell whether what he's doing bodes well with the music or your sonic vision, you shouldn't be running a band in the first place.

good luck

All you need is to see if he can play. Bassists need rhythm, style and stage presence nowadays, so check him for that.

For bass:

1. he need to know basic things SCALES are an important one

2. can he jam along no problem with you
ex. read chord progressions/chart/ music on the spot

3. can he do more than just play the tonic (well for this it depends on what style)

when it comes to band mates there's an old saying i read somewhere that sums it up nicely 'someone you can get along with will get better at their instrument, a talented butthole will always be a butthole.'

if you're in it to have fun with your buddies just find someone you can get along with.

if you're in it to make a buck, find out about previous experience. there are LOTS of talented people who have this mystical vision of tour buses and painted ladies all over the place. the reality is quite different. find out what other bands he/she has been in and why they're no longer with those bands. if they can't/won't talk about it there's an issue.
