I'm a solo artist, any ideas on getting out there? (lyrics, bass)

So, pretty much, I don't have much singing ability, but I play the guitar, the bass, the piano, keyboard, anything really. I can compose my songs and write lyrics well but I'm dead broke and don't even have my own gitfiddle anymore...
Any ideas?

I think this thread's gonna get moved real quick, but it should stay alive because it doesn't look like you're advertising...

I'm betting you don't have huge resources. You should first buy (or download) cheap mixing software and record a few songs yourself, and find someone to represent you. If you decide to go to the studio and record there, don't drop assloads of money into it. If you can't find someone to represent you, try to lobby to managers yourself to play at small gigs (coffee houses, bars and small clubs). The key is to get someone to recognize your talent so you can take your abilities further.

I'm kinda in a similar situation. Guitar is my best, but bass comes easy from that and I can put some backing piano into things.
I think the person above me has it pretty straight, try organizing your songs through computer software like guitar pro. If you have Mac you could try Logic Pro or, for Windows, Cubase (Which is what I've spent the last few hours trying to figure out.)
Organize your stuff there, record some samples and what not, get 'em on mp3 and put your stuff out. Myspace, purevolume, other sites like that are nice.
I've just been going to local venues and I plan on getting my stuff to the people who arrange the shows there and just trying to work my way in. The more outlets you've got, the better.

if you live anywhere near a beach or a cafe, i suggest you see if they have any free admission shows, get someone to play the drums and sing. do some simple covers and a few originals. also talk to any local musicians you may happen to see in coffee shops or parks
