I'm going to counter that with the fact that they very obviously understand exactly what kind of world we live in. They understand that a LARGE portion of the population wants to isolate themselves from a lot of the unpleasantness; same as a lot of people want the convenience of fast food, a lot of people want the simplicity of thoughtless rock music.
Their sales of around 50 million units puts them on par (if not sadly above) groups like Black Sabbath, Oasis, Tom Petty, Willie Nelson, The Police, REM, Alice Cooper, Johnny Cash, and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. They understand
exactly what they are doing and if anyone honestly thinks for a second that they're any kind of hurt or upset by complaints and derision from people who 'know' what good music is then I strongly suggest watching a bit of wrestling until you grasp the full concept of a heel.
The complaints from the haters get them more press and attention than their
PR.
