Yeah Heroin didn't give Billie Holiday new insights into world weariness and aged wisdom. It just became a trap she couldn't escape from and dragged her down. I think she might have done work that was just as achingly beautiful and worldy in her later years without heroin, but it might not have been so unrelentingly sad and hopeless. I have a hard time listening to stuff like 'Lady in Satin' because it is just so grim and sad. She was f*cked and she knew it.
