It's children singing old spirituals. The Child Development Group of Mississippi was founded by a Head Start grant (thus the name of the album) as a day care center for children of civil rights workers and activists living in the state. It's one of the many wonderful Smithsonian Folkways releases.

I've always preferred
On Avery Island by a mile, but there's better contemporary folk and weird indie rock noise fusions floating around than both, for sure.
