Gorillaz are usually placed in the "alternative rap" or "indie pop" category but I can see why some people think of Gorillaz as trip hop. The trip hop genre is highly subjective and some folks will argue that some of the groups aren't trip hop, while other groups should be included. I'm a pluralist and I'm not to fussy about correct or incorrect genre labeling.
Every group or artist on my chronological list have been labelled trip hop at some point in their musical career, but many of the artists on the list have disavowed the trip hop label.

I've always loved trip hop because it was the 90s alternative to grunge rock and/or Britpop. In many ways grunge and Britpop are more about rock music's past while trip hop is about rock music's future. Most modern rock bands have incorporated elements of trip hop and electronica since the rise the Bristol Sound introduced trip hop in the UK in the early 90s. Rock & roll is no longer centered around the guitar sound as it was in the early Sixties when the Beatles changed everything.
In the long run trip hop has been more influential because mainstream rock & rap groups have adopted the production techniques, the drum beats and use of electronic gadgetry that was pioneered by the earliest trip hop groups. From my perspective newer musical genres like dub step are permutations trip hop.
