^I agree with you Sequoioideae, John Cage was - just like Stockhausen - laid the groundwork for the modern (electronic) music.
Although not many of you may know him, I'd like to add Hans-Martin Linde because he's an influencial recorder-virtuoso and composer of the 20th century.

Since we're living in a globalized world and in the society of pluralism it's hard to decide on the most innovative artists; just because there are so many musical genres.
I'm pretty sure though that the Beatles were simply as important as Michael Jackson for the pop-scene. That is just one genre out of estimated 1000 musical genres in the world.
