I brought her up as an example to illustrate a good point you made.
Just because an artist is on a mainstream label does not necessarily mean they will be mainstream or excessively commercial. In Janelle's case, she is on a mainstream label but she is not that popular. I wouldn't call her a mainstream artist just because she is on a mainstream label.

You might know Monae, but probably not ever artist who has recorded on the Atlantic label. I love Janelle Monae but I wouldn't call her a mainstream artist because she technically is not despite being on a mainstream label and I agree with this post.
