For my favourite era, the '60s:
UK: Beatles, Roling Stones, Kinks, The Who
US: Beach Boys, Byrds, Doors
I didn't know where to put the Jimi Hendrix Experience, as Hendrix was American, but the rest were British.
Those are just my favourites of the era, not necessarily the "best" overall. I'll take the Brits.
