The whole damaged broken people doing it because they don't have alot of options just seems so stereotypical. It might be that way for a few but I don't feel like they are the majority like you do. Also your boss example doesn't work because you aren't paid per job that you do and you don't have to sign the specific details of what you are going to do that day before getting paid. Bad example.
