Why do people listen to ambient?! Just to zone out or trip or something? It's nice if you consider it like soundtrack music, it's inoffensive and it suggests something more exciting than the music is happening in the foreground, but?? I don't really get any pleasure from that. Maybe for meditation?
Don't really want to get totally off-topic but I'd like to answer this question. There are a lot of different kinds of ambient, and it sounds like the album you just heard was very dark and brooding. Not everything in the genre is necessarily like that and I usually don't really like ambient that is like that. The stuff that really speaks to my soul is the peaceful, gentle sounding ambient. Just give the first minute or so of this a try and I think you'll see a little more in it:

It definitely zones me out, but in a way that puts my whole mind at peace. I don't think of it as soundtrack music even though it might seem like that. I just find it remarkably soothing and I can listen to it in any situation, whether I'm working on something and have it on in the background or want to really focus on all the beautiful intricacies of the music.
