I love Grateful Dead but also understand the dislike. I actually thought much the same way, that they were boring guitar noodlers. Then I had to learn some songs for a band I was in and realized they really have some great music. I don't know how you could listen to American Beauty and think it's not a great selection of concise songs. Brokedown Palace and Ripple are 2 of the most beautiful songs ever written. A good example of a band where you never hear the good stuff on the radio. I think many people dismiss them based on reputation but sounds like people here have at least tried to listen so I'm not trying to convince anyone.
