But why did it take so long to get it recognized on a federal level? Because of all the lobbying from religious groups and right wing politicians? Same-sex marriage here in Ontario was made legal in 2003 with
Halpern v Canada AG, which was the first law made out of all the provinces. Two years later, the federal government passed the
Civil Marriage Act which allowed same-sex couples to get legally married.
I feel like the US only legalized same-sex marriage just so they could be on the same page as other countries who did this 10 years ago. A 5-4 Supreme Court ruling is hardly a landslide victory like everyone on the Internet is making it out to be.
