I don't think that pointing that out is as much a dick move, as starting this ridiculous discussion in the first place.
Unless the person criticizing it does so in a dickish manner, and you did. You were quite rude to him. The thread may be ridiculous (I couldn't care either way), but people aren't going to want to listen to dick moves. If you want to stop the thread, you could try go back to trying to teach him something.
