James' vocals were pretty crap, and the band were really just trying to dress a bunch of arena hard rock up in an alt rock dress, but I'd say that the songs on that album are actually pretty memorable, even if they're not to one's taste. It's been forever and a day since I've listened to
Load and
Reload, but I suspect that I'd take them over
The Black Album any day of the week (OMFG I hate that album).
If you can look at that album objectively then I'd suggest giving Megadeth's
Risk a shot. It's often seen as their lowest point, and much like
Load and
Reload, but I surprised myself a little while back by listening to it and absolutely loving it. Dave doesn't do diversity quite as well as Metallica, but... I don't know, his pop rock/metal just has more charm I guess.
