It says "In the beginning God created the heavens and the Earth." That is called exposition, which means it tell you inadvance what will happen. Then it goes on to describes what. The creation story wasn't meant to be a scientific paper that was to be examined by peer review. It was meant as an introduction of a metaphysical outlook of life. And it also implies whatever pagan people worship, e.g. the sun the moon, (whatever have you) God created those things.
