It's not strange that the horizon appears straight - it should appear straight on a spherical earth. A sphere will look the same in every direction - imagine an ant on a smooth ball if that helps. A cylindrical earth would have a curved horizon. A flat earth wouldn't have a clearly defined horizon, more a gradual blurring as further away points become more difficult to see. With a telescope you'd be able to see Australia from the US.
